has revised his timeline for Artificial Intelligence (AI) surpassing human intelligence. In a recent interview with Norges Bank CEO Nicolai Tangen on X, Musk stated that he believes AI will surpass human intellect as early as the end of next year, 2026. Previously, Musk predicted that this would occur by 2029 or even 2030. Musk's revised perspective on the timeline for AI surpassing human intelligence might be due to the rapid advancements in the field. Companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft are racing to build the best AI products, which could be contributing to Musk's shortened timeline. Musk attributes the accelerated development of AI to the world's brightest minds moving into the field. He mentions that physicists and other brilliant individuals are now focusing on AI, which could lead to faster advancements. Despite the progress being made in AI, Musk acknowledges that there are challenges that could hinder its development. Last year, the constraint was the dwindling supply of chips needed to power AI training efforts. This year, Musk believes the challenge will be transitioning to a "voltage transformer supply" or obtaining the total amount of electricity needed to power AI systems. He also mentions that companies are running out of quality data to train their models. Musk is not the only one facing training obstacles in AI development. OpenAI, a firm Musk helped start, is discussing feeding its upcoming model GPT-5 on YouTube video transcripts to prepare for a potential information shortage. Google is also reportedly hitting a wall, having struck a $60 million dollar-a-year deal with Reddit to train its AI models on user posts. Despite the progress being made in AI, some experts believe that machines won't be as smart as humans for a long time. Daphne Koller, a former computer science professor at Stanford and a MacArthur "genius," stated on a January panel that machines still have a lot to learn before they can match human intelligence.
